It is always exciting for a freshman to see his first action in a Big 10 football game. Many are not mature enough to play right away, so they redshirt. For a select few like Illini safety Walt Aikens, it is a dream fulfilled. From an obscure recruit to the fifth Illini freshman to see playing time, Aikens has made rapid progress.

Walter Aikens was a three-sport star at Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, but he didn't have a large number of college scholarship offers. His school struggles against the bigger schools in the Charlotte area, so few colleges knew about him.
