Brandon Paul Update From The Shootout

Brandon Paul

The next couple days InsideIlllini.com will give a player update from the basketball shootout that took place at Assembly Hall today we have Brandon Paul from Warren Township HS in Gurnee, IL.

Brandon Paul: 6-3 SG: Outside of a tough performance vs. an out of this world Joseph Bertrand, Paul had a very nice day at C-U. With his quick and long arms he is a load with his on the ball defense. He is also very good roaming the passing lanes and making teams pay with some high rising finishes. He also did a great job on the glass using his strength and athletic ability to snag numerous rebounds. Paul did play with an injured shooting hand/wrist and that may have affected his perimeter shot. Paul did hit some tough perimeter shots vs. Simeon but struggled from the arc vs. Sterling.

Paul is a 6'3" strong, aggressive athlete who plays extremely hard and looks to be a lock down defender at the next level. In the first game against Rock Island he completely shut down Chasson Randle and took him out of the game as a weapon. Warren played some box-and-1 defense with Paul chasing Randle and it worked very well. Paul looks like a physical specimen and plays that way too. Paul jumped center in the first two games showing that he gets off the ground very quickly and high, which allows him to win the tips against taller players. Paul has very quick hands and looks to jump the passing lanes and start the break the other way. He is a very aggressive, in your face defender, and can back it up with his quickness both side-to-side and vertically. His extremely long arms also aid his defensive prowess.

On offense Paul showed some very good passing skills and used his left hand quite a bit but needs to tighten his handle. He isn't a natural scorer. Paul is a streaky shooter but did hit some threes on the day. Despite his strength and great leaping ability Paul could stand to improve his finishing ability as well, but he is fearless taking the ball to the hole and will pick up many FT opportunities.
