Illini Recruit Brandon Paul Update

Brandon Paul

Brandon Paul's high school team is off to an 8-4 season so far. We caught up with Paul to get an update on his season and his thoughts on this year's Fighting Illini, get inside.

Brandon Paul is a 6-3 combo guard from Warren Township HS in Gurnee, IL. He is a class of 2009 verbal commitment that is skyrocketing up the recruiting charts. Paul is averaging 19.3 ppg and 8 rebounds and 3 assist. "We're off to a good start to the season, we work pretty hard in practice, we work on defense and overall we just try to play hard all the time," said Paul.

Since he announced his verbal commitment to Illinois, Paul has definitely seen a difference in the way teams are playing him now. "My coach is pretty good about recognizing how teams play me. I certainly see a lot more box-and-1 coverage, and when teams do play zones, they tend to shift to my side a little more which sometimes makes it difficult to score. But I like the challenge it presents," Paul added.

Paul said his overall game has improved but he still continues to work hard. He's working on his ball handling, defense, and really trying to get his endurance up, so when teams make runs at them, fatigue doesn't set in.

Paul is only junior right now, but he can't wait to play for Illinois. His last visit to Assembly Hall came during the Ohio State game. "Right now they're really struggling, and things could be a little better for them. They just have to work harder in practice and it will all pay off. Next year they're going to be really good when Alex Legion is able to play," Paul said.

"I just want them to win and do well. A lot of people tell me that we should be really good when we all get there and we are set at guards," said Paul, referring to fellow 2009 verbal commitments D.J. Richardson and Joseph Bertrand. "Now we just need another big man to go along side us. I'm going to start calling Mason Plumlee. I know Illinois is recruiting him, so I'm going to do my part and try to help," added Paul.
