Reports from a local newspaper in Ohio that Steve Matas gave Illinois’ head Coach Ron Zook a verbal commitment today.

One thing is for sure, you can question Ron Zook all you want when it comes to X’s and O’s but the guy knows how to recruit football players. According to the Plain Dealer newspaper out of Ohio, Steve Matas committed to the Illini.

Matas is a 6-foot-5, 255-pound defensive end from Mentor High in Ohio that was interested in Akron, Ohio State, Syracuse, Bowling Green, Michigan State and Iowa.

Scout.Com profile: As a junior, Matas racked up over 70 tackles and five sacks while earning All-Area honor for his efforts. “I think my biggest strength is my motor. I never take a play off and I play with high intensity.”
