Illinois @ Northwestern: Box Score Breakdown

Posted Jan 22, 2006

The Fighting Illini continued Big Ten Conference play this week with a trip to Evanston, IL. This edition of the Box Score Breakdown will look at Illinois’ game against the Wildcats looks at the Illini lineups, and finds a common thread in the successful ones, much-maligned junior shooting guard Rich McBride.

The Illini’s weekend excursion to Evanston resulted in their first Big Ten Conference road victory. The Illini jumped out to a quick lead, and then coasted through the end of the game en route to their eleven point victory over the Wildcats. With James Augustine and Dee Brown playing the entire game for the Illini, Bruce Weber did not need to go deep on his bench, and he didn’t.

According to Weber in post game interviews, Marcus Arnold did not play in Saturday afternoon’s game because of the way the Illini matched up with Northwestern. With Arnold not getting any playing time, it allowed Warren Carter to see more time on the court. With the increased playing time, including being the first person off the bench for the Illini, Carter had one of his best statistical game as an Illini, including a career-high 12 rebounds.

It is interesting to note that there were only two lineups for Illinois that were what one would call successful. These two lineups played just over fifteen minutes, and when they were in the game the Illini built up a combined twenty-eight point lead.

After struggling to start the second half against the Hoosiers, the Illini starting lineup jumped out of the gate to start the game, and the second half. In the five minutes that started up each half, the starting lineup did just what Bruce Weber wanted them to do: set the tone for the game, ensuring Northwestern would never gain any confidence that they could upset the Illini.

The other lineup that netted the positive result for the Illini was the lineup Bruce Weber used at the end of the game in the offensive portion of the offensive / defensive substitutions. The lineup of Dee Brown, Jamar Smith, Rich McBride, Warren Carter, and James Augustine represented Illinois’ best five free throw shooters on the court, and they were in the game to seal it from the line when Northwestern started to foul during the final two minutes.

Hey, look who it is at the top of the Illinois player +/- rankings? Isn’t that the same junior shooting guard that has been derided by the vocal Illinois fans on the Hoops Fan Forum and by some members of the media? Yep, it is Rich McBride.

After not playing great games for the first four Big Ten games, McBride came out on Saturday afternoon and scored 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting, all from behind the three point arc. Yes, it would be nice to see him take the ball into the paint more and generate some offense that way, but right now no Illinois guard is doing that.
