By now, everyone knows Illinois
is in search of a combo guard and/or a point guard as a key piece in their 2015 recruiting class. Park Hill (MO) guard Landry Shamet
put himself on their radar and earned an offer with his play during the July evaluation period. He told us what he feels he brings to the table as a prospect.
“My versatility is one of my biggest assets," Shamet said. "I can play multiple positions and be able to have an effect on the game in different ways. I don’t just have to score. I can pass and get other guys involved as well. I’m a great leader and teammate and take a lot of pride in having good teammates.”
Recently he cut his school list to four finalists. They are Illinois, Wichita State, Colorado, and Kansas State. Shamet discussed what put those four at the head of the pack.
“The feel. I talk about feel a lot and it’s something I can’t really describe," he said. "But all four felt really good when I got on campus. The idea that I could see myself succeeding in all four playing styles and being a successful student as well. I have good relationships with the coaching staffs as well.”
Shamet has official visits scheduled for the quartet of schools.
“Wichita State was this weekend. Colorado, September 13th weekend. Then Kansas State September 26th weekend. Then Illinois October 10th weekend,” he said.
Before narrowing his list, Shamet took an unofficial visit to Champaign and got to see what Illinois has to offer.
“Basically saw the campus, got to spend time with coaching staff, and checked out the arena under construction,” he said.
The rising senior was impressed with what he saw.
“I really liked all the coaches," Shamet said. "I like how they play and I like the fact that they are in the Big 10. A lot to like.”
What has been the Illini coaching staff’s selling point to Shamet?
“They play through their guards and set a lot of ball screens," he said. "And they like my versatility in their system. Also they’re losing three big time players and need to re-bolster their guards. So opportunities of early playing time would be fitting as well.”
Park Hill (MO) guard Landry Shamet had a big summer on the travel team circuit with the KC Pumas which elevated his recruiting stock. The combo guard recently narrowed his list down to four schools including the Illini. Shamet gives us the latest heading into his official visits.
