Likely chooses Maryland

In a state loaded with talented prospects, William Likely does it all. The 2013 cornerback / all-around playmaker made an impact in multiple roles for his Glades Central (Belle Glade, FL) team – as a corner, running back, receiver, and kick returner. As a junior, Likely was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida. He's finished his high school career and will be heading to Maryland.

William Likely chose Maryland over several schools including Wake Forest, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Louisville, and more. He said it was a long process to come to a final choice, but he knows it's the right one.

"It was a tough decision, but I talked it over with my parents and we just decided it was the best opportunity for me," he said.

"That program stands out. They were down a few years ago, you can see the rebuilding they're going through and the impact of them moving to the Big Ten, it's awesome. I'm just ready to get it started."

Likely said he really enjoyed his visit to Maryland but it wasn't until later on that he really knew it was the right place for him.

"It was a nice visit, to be honest, when I got back, it still wasn't at the top. I had to think it over. It was still LSU and Florida State in my mind," he said.

"I thought about it, prayed about it, and we just talked it out. My little brother told me to go to Maryland so I'm just following his word."

Likely is clear that his choice to play at Maryland was a family decision but in the end he made the final call. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound athlete was recruited by the Terps as a cornerback and he knows he can be a difference-maker on the next level.

"I think I can make plays and defend people and stop them from scoring," he said.

Likely finished high school with a 3.9 GPA and will enroll early at Maryland. He says goodbye to South Florida on January 20th.
