Commit Capsule: Caleb Day

IlliniPlaybook's breakdown of Illinois commit Caleb Day

Commit Capsule: Caleb Day

Date Committed: 6/21/2012

Position: Cornerback/Safety

In early June, Day, after a long silence about his recruitment, stated that he had narrowed his list to Illinois, Ohio State, and Michigan. Only two weeks later, Day made his commitment to Illinois and surprised a lot of people in doing so. But regardless of how he ended up at Illinois, he's a big get for the Illini. And at the Illinois Friday Night Lights, the Hilliard (OH) Darby product showed that he can play when all eyes are on him.

What He Brings:

Physically, Day is very well put together and has the size and speed to play either corner or safety. When Day camped at Illinois this summer, he consistently smothered receivers in coverage and batted away a fair amount of passes. He has confidence in his game and plays with a hint of swagger when he's on the field. And that can be a contagious attribute.

What Can Improve:

Day is an extremely dynamic athlete, and once he refines some of the details of his technique, he could be in for a lot of early playing time. One thing he could easily fix is keeping his core, specifically his hips, square to the play. In his pursuit he has a tendency to turn too far and it can slow his change of direction.

What Is Unique:

Day was a two-way player for Darby, splitting time at running back as well. Day rushed for 261 yards in 2011 and four scores. On defense he recovered two fumbles and returned one of them 91 yards for a touchdown. It's not out of the question that he could see action on both sides of the ball in college, but his future home is more than likely on the defensive side of the ball. Highlights:
