Decision Day: Demetrius Jackson

Two fan bases anxiously await the 4 p.m. decision by Demetrius Jackson, a highly rated point guard in the 2013 class.

Deciding between Illinois and Notre Dame, Jackson will announce his college choice live on ESPNU.

While hype and anticipation inevitably comes with these type of recruiting battles, the fact that nobody is sure what the Mishawaka, Ind., native is going do has only added to the build-up.

"He's certainly got me guessing," remarked Fox Sports analyst Evan Daniels. "I really don't know where he's going. He's had everybody guessing the whole time."

The 6-1, 185-pound Jackson visited Illinois at the end of August, and coach John Groce and his staff made it clear he's a top remaining target in the current class.

Ranked the No. 5 point guard in '13, Jackson fits a critical need of the Illini.

“It would be absolutely huge for Illinois to get Jackson,” said Fox Sports recruiting analyst Brian Snow. “John Groce's system is extremely point guard driven. Everything is based on ball screens and the offense runs through the point guard.

“He has elite athleticism, makes shots and gets into the lane. He has everything you need in an offense to make it run."

Should Jackson choose Illinois, he'd continue a run of momentum created earlier this month by the commitment of Kendrick Nunn, a four-star guard from Simeon High (Chicago). Groce has built a strong class in his first year on the job, with guard Malcolm Hill (Belleville, Ill.) and forward Maverick Morgan (Springboro, Ohio) already in the fold as verbal commitments.

That trio can sign a letter-of-intent in November, and Groce would love to have Jackson join them.

“If that happens, then you're looking at an absolute home run for coach Groce’s first class," Snow said. "That would be a great class considering they got started so late.”

Standing in Illinois' way is the Fighting Irish, whose campus is less than 20 minutes from Jackson's home.

Coach Mike Brey has recruited Jackson for a long time, applying the full court press in his recruitment longer than any other coach. Jackson visited Notre Dame last weekend, giving the Irish staff a final chance to deliver a sales pitch.

Everyone will know the verdict this afternoon. Until then, it's anybody's guess.

“Demetrius does things his way. I don't say that as a negative, but nobody is going to know except him,” Snow said.
