2013 CB Ranthony Texada recently cut his list down to six and took an unofficial visit to SMU last week. The three-star prospect now has one more visit to go before making a final decision.
When Frisco Centennial (TX) defensive back
Ranthony Texada
camped at
SMU
last month, he accomplished something he had never done before.
Texada impressed SMU coaches during one-on-one drills when he absolutely shut down wide receivers, but it was his blazing 4.38 forty time that left everyone one in attendance speechless.
“It was my first time running in the 4.3’s. It was big,” Texada said. “I don’t think the coaches thought I was going to go run a time like that.”
Needless to say, SMU offered just a few day later and has been in contact with the speedy corner ever since.
With 19 offers on the table, Texada decided to cut his list down to six-
Baylor
,
Illinois
,
Iowa State
, SMU,
TCU
, and
Western Kentucky
- just a few weeks ago. The three-star prospect has already visited all three Big 12 programs and recently took an unofficial to SMU.
“Everything went well,” Texada said of his time on the Hilltop. “When I went there for the camp, I didn’t get to see much so this was the first time I got a good look at everything. “
Texada’s favorite part about the entire visit was simply having the opportunity to sit down with SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason and discuss his potential future as a Mustang.
“I enjoyed just hanging out with Coach Mason and talking in his office. We discussed where I would fit in and everything,” Texada said. “He said I would have a good shot at winning a corner spot if I went there and also help out as a returner. He’s just a cool guy. “
But if you ask his mother, who also came along for the ride, it was SMU’s prestigious academics that caught her attention.
“My mom really liked the education part because she’s a teacher,” Texada said. “I took a campus tour too, and they showed me the academic side of SMU. I can get a good degree from there, and it’ll take me a long way.”
Having already taken visits to four of his top six schools, Texada’s next and final stop will be Western Kentucky next weekend.
“They were my first offer. I have a really good relationship with the coaches,” he said. “They offered me back in February so we’ve been talking for a long time. I just want to see what it’s like over there.”
Texada added that he will ‘commit a couple of days after’ the visit.
